“Speech & Debate” Presented by RSU Theatre
April 11, 2014 @ 7:05 pm - 10:00 pm$10
The Rogers State University Theatre Program will be presenting Stephen Karam’s “Speech & Debate” April 10-12 and April 17-19 at the Will Rogers Auditorium on the Claremore campus. Showtime is 7:07 p.m.
The story centers on three teenage misfits in Salem, Ore., who are linked by a sex scandal that’s rocked their town. When one of them sets out to expose the truth, secrets become currency, the stakes get higher and the trio’s connection grows deeper in this searching, fiercely funny dark comedy with music.
The New York Times has said “that topical plot is almost window dressing. The play’s real accomplishment is its picture of the borderland between late adolescence and adulthood, where grown-up ideas and ambition coexist with childish will and bravado.”
The cast includes:
- Diwata: Sharleen Branch, a sophomore from Bartlesville
- Solomon: Jericho Billings, a junior from Yukon
- Howie: Bubba Enlow, a freshman from Jay
- Teacher and Reporter: Elizabeth Black, a senior from Dallas, Tex.
The play is directed by David Blakely, RSU Associate Professor of Communications and director of the RSU Theatre Program. Mary Mackie, Professor of English and Humanities, is serving as the assistant director. Michael Robinson, a junior from Claremore, is serving as the technical designer and Renee Cox, Assistant Professor of English and Humanities, is the costume designer.
Admission for regular performances is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and $2 for RSU faculty, staff and students who present university ID. All proceeds will benefit student participation in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival regional competition. The play contains adult themes and strong language.
