The First United Methodist Church of Claremore extends an invitation to individuals grieving the loss of a wife, husband or a child to attend one of its Grief Support Classes. The loss of a loved one is a devastating hardship to face and we do not want anyone to try and face this alone. We are offering these free classes to anyone experiencing this grief. We want you to know that you are loved and welcomed to come and share your story with us. We have educated and experienced group leaders who have faced their own losses as well. There is no charge or fee for any of these classes.

The Child Loss Class offers help to those who have experienced the loss of a child (of any age).  It is this group’s mission to offer a time of caring and sharing which brings healing and hope. The group is led by three couples (Dan and Teresa Dexter, Rhonda and Scott Mayfield, and Linda and Shelton Layman) who have received extensive training as Stephen Ministers and who have experienced the loss of a child themselves.

The Widows Grief support group is using the book Good Grief by Granger Westberg. In sensitive, insightful, and easy-to-read language Westberg outlines the stages of grief. Come and find comfort and rediscover hope after loss. Good Grief identifies ten stages of grief–shock, emotion, depression, physical distress, panic, guilt, anger, resistance, hope, and acceptance but, recognizing that grief is complex and deeply personal, defines no “right” way to grieve. Good Grief offers valuable insights on the emotional and physical responses persons may experience during the natural process of grieving. This group is led by Sheila Urbonas. Sheila has completed her master’s degree in counseling, is a certified school counselor, has received extensive training as Stephen Ministers and has experienced loss at first hand.

The Widower Class provides information about loss and grief combined with coping strategies that will be beneficial to help widowers along their journey. The meetings are confidential, and although we do not have all the answers about grief, we truly understand the devastation resulting in the loss of a wife. We are here to offer you compassion and support. Together we can endure the challenges that we face now and in the future as we hold fast to the memories of our loved one.  This class is led by Jay Peary. Jay is a widower who has received extensive training as Stephen Ministers for over three years.

These classes will be offered on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church beginning February 25th, 2015.  These groups are offered free of charge. For more information, contact Frances Ibáñez, Director of Care Ministries at FUMC, at (918) 341-4580.
