RSU Faculty Research Public Lecture:  “The Ice Age and Beyond:  Recent Research in the Archaeology of Northeastern Oklahoma”

Dr. Brian Andrews, an assistant professor of social science at Rogers State University, will be presenting information on his recent archaeological excavations at Goodson Rockshelter, located near Chelsea, OK.  The lecture is free and open to the public.  It will be held in the Baird Hall Performance Studio on the campus of RSU on Wednesday, March 11th, at 6p.

The title of the lecture is “The Ice Age and Beyond:  Recent Research in the Archaeology of Northeastern Oklahoma.”

About 11,000 years ago, the ancient ancestors of modern Native Americans first came to Oklahoma, where they have resided since.  The archaeological record of this occupation suggests that these groups of hunters and gatherers adapted to changing environments after the end of the last Ice Age, starting as relatively small, mobile social groups and eventually forming large and socially complex civilizations.  Ongoing excavations and research at Goodson Shelter, near Chelsea Oklahoma, have revealed a detailed record of this 11,000 year occupation.  In combination with other sites from the area we are now putting together a more complete picture of prehistoric life in Oklahoma.
