James Muns: Makin’ Music

munsJames Muns is a guy in his 40s. A family man, with a wife and three kids. A guy who wears concert t-shirts and jeans. A man who loves music.

More than 40 years ago, as a pre-schooler (now you can figure out how old he is!), James discovered his passion for music. It helps that he grew up in a family band, playing bluegrass and country. He has honed his talent and skills over the course of his life, and now plays eight instruments. He’s a singer, too. He can basically play anything with strings, including the guitar, fiddle, banjo, dobro and mandolin, as well as the drums.

Fourteen years ago, James started a taxidermy and meat processing company called Muns & Sons. A guy’s gotta pay the bills, right? Today, Muns & Sons is doing very well, but James still wanted to be active in the music industry. He got a job at Claremore Music teaching lessons, and enjoyed that for that past five years. In December, Claremore Music decided to close its doors. James saw an opportunity to continue doing what he enjoys most.

James decided that Claremore was still in need of a good music store, so he chased his dream and started his own. Muns Music opened in February.

munsThe store’s bread and butter is in lessons. In addition to James’ long list of instruments that he teaches, students can also learn piano from Elizabeth Yates. Lessons are available Monday – Friday, and students must be ages 5 -99. (If you’re 100, I bet he’d let you in, though.) James would like to get the word out that daytime slots are available, and are an ideal time for homeschool students to get some music instruction. Lessons are available in guitar, drums, piano, fiddle, banjo, bass, mandolin, dobro, ukulele and voice.

Muns Music also sells stringed instruments, especially guitars. (There is quite a selection!) For band students, instrument rental and repair is available. The store contracts through Music Store, Inc., which is the company formerly used by Claremore Music, so don’t be nervous about changing. Because you’re not. Other items carried by the store include reeds, amps and literature. If there is something you’re looking for that you don’t see, don’t hesitate to ask, because it can easily be ordered. No need to make the haul to Tulsa!

The store sells and rents PA systems and can provide a sound man for your event. PA installation is offered for churches; they’ll even give you a free bid.

Muns Music is looking to hire a teacher for wind instruments, like the trumpet, flute and saxophone. If you are interested, or simply want to learn more about Muns Music, stop by and see James and his crew. They are located at 1005 W. Archer, just north of Cotton Eyed Joe’s.

Keep it local, Claremore.
