The Rogers County Free Fitness Training “Couch to 5k” Program (RoCo Fit) starts its fall session August 8th. If you have a desire to improve your health, this program is for you. Experienced mentors will guide participants through 12 weeks of progressive walk or walk/run workouts designed to help them finish a 5k Mock race. Professionals will educate on form, injury prevention, core strength, nutrition, and safety. RoCo Fit is free and open to anyone 13 years old or older, who live, work, play, or learn in Rogers County.
During the session, RoCo Fit meets each Tuesday and Thursday at 6p at Claremore Lake.
Since, 2012 RoCo Fit has offered this free program to the community. Close to 2,000 unduplicated participants have registered and reaped the benefits. Rogers County Health Department and many community partners are proud to continue supporting this program with staff, volunteers, incentives, and/or assistance. The program’s success is due to the numerous partnerships and volunteers involved each session. This community collaboration has contributed to improving health statistics for Rogers County. This is evidenced by the rise in rank of Rogers County’s Health Outcomes from 9th in 2012 to 4th in 2016, Health Factors from 14th to 6th, and Health Behaviors from 21st to 4th out of 77 Oklahoma counties, according to the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Health Rankings and Roadmaps. According to the State of the County’s Health Reports comparison, coronary heart disease deaths dropped from 221.4 deaths per 100,000 in 2010 to 211.8 in 2014.
In addition to improved health statistics, many past participants have shared their experiences through written testimonial. Here are a few:
“I joined RoCo Fit again this spring after being unable to walk for about nine months because of an injury. This is an awesome way to get back to exercising. We have an enjoyable group of people, especially the mentors, who keep us motivated and entertained!! Thanks RoCo Fit for making walking fun.”
“It has giving me the encouragement I need to keep me walking. A year ago I put on 40 lbs, and I was depressed and not doing any activity. Not anymore with the help of my mentors and my friend, I am ready to get healthy. Woo hoo!! Thanks for all you do.”
“Several years ago, I found myself sitting home alone after my husband’s death and becoming more and more dormant. Some of my friends from work talked me into the Couch to 5K program. I told myself that I had not run or walked in years and that maybe I should try if only to get out of the house. Running sounded like a change to me. I arrived at the lake with the tennis shoes and a sweat set I had for weekends. The people called mentors were so nice and engaging and acted like they really cared if I walked each Tuesday and Thursday. I learned real fast that if I drank lots of water the day before we were walking and did my honor walk that I could get by easier than if I did not. I also learned that I looked forward to seeing people again. The exercise we did helped me sleep which I was not doing much of before. I learned that shoes that were for walking were easier on my feet. Socks that were breathable were good too! I learned that there was a reason that everyone wore clothes that were breathable.”
“At the end of the session, I got a breathable t-shirt and I did not want to stop this awesome program, so I have not. Thank you for making a difference.”
