This week the City of Claremore will begin an extended project to evaluate its water distribution system. The purpose of the project is to assess the condition of the City of Claremore’s aging water system and identify needed improvements.
“We look forward to completing a comprehensive assessment of our water distribution system so that we can begin to systematically improve and replace old infrastructure,” said Jim Thomas, Claremore city manager. “In order to fully evaluate and prioritize the needed repairs, we first need to have a complete picture of the system.”
As part of the analysis, all fire hydrants and valves in the system will be operated to determine their condition and the need for repair or replacement. Operating inactive fire hydrants and valves could cause corrosion deposits and mineral scale to be stirred up in the water, potentially causing discoloration and sediment. While the City will work diligently during this process to minimize changes to the water, there is no way to completely prevent it. Households that experience sediment or discoloration to their water should thoroughly flush lines in their house by flushing toilets and running all faucets for several minutes. Claremore has dedicated approximately $5 million through 2021 to improve its water distribution system. It is estimated $1.5 million will be spent on necessary repairs identified by this system assessment. This project will also help determine future-funding needs required to modernize Claremore’s water system.
