Claremore’s best-kept sports secret is a nine-year-old, 4’6″, 70-pound spitfire named Addyson Harley Morris. You probably haven’t heard of her yet because she’s fresh to the local wrestling scene, with less than six months of experience on the mat. But by this time next month, she could be bringing home a World Championship title.
New to wrestling but not to sports, Morris spent several seasons playing soccer before turning her attention to something she considers more challenging.
“Soccer is fun,” she said. “But wrestling is hard, and it’s one-on-one, and I like that. I’m not afraid to work hard and win.”
It didn’t take long for Morris to start climbing the podium at tournaments, despite brackets stacked with more experienced boys. Her series of wins has earned her an OKWA Girls 9U 75 State Championship title, which in turn earned her a place on the OKWA State Travel Team. The team will be heading to Reno, NV, in April where Morris will compete in the 6th Annual Girls’ Reno World Tournament.
Morris’s fast-rising star has been a surprise, even for her own family, who are used to her natural athletic talents.
“Nobody in this family is a wrestler,” said her mother, Rachel. “She’s played sports before, but we knew literally nothing about wrestling when she started. We have had to learn, and fast!”
As all sports families know, supporting kids is an expensive undertaking, both in terms of time and money. Such a quick transition from untrained novice to State Champion is beyond impressive, but creates logistics problems. The Morris family could use some community support getting our local talent to the world stage. And you can help!
A benefit garage sale is happening March 14, 15, and 16, to help raise funds for travel expenses. The sale will happen at 810 N. Osage in Claremore, and the event is rain or shine. They will have great deals on garage sale items, as well as drinks, snacks, Sonic discount cards, and handmade jewelry from local artist Thoughtful Designs.
A GoFundMe account has also been set up and is accepting donations now. Every dollar helps! ALL proceeds go toward travel expenses for the family to go to Reno for the competition, and every donation is appreciated.
Don’t lose sight of this special young lady. She’s not going to be a big deal – she already is!
