Claremore-ish Native Named ‘Crossroads Icon’

Will Rogers, Mark Twain, President Ike Eisenhower and President Bill Clinton? What do they have in common?

They are “Crossroads Icons,” listed in the 2018 The Group Travel Leader Travel guide and tell how Claremore, Hannibal, Missouri, Abilene, Kansas, and Little Rock, Arkansas, show off the best of their celebrities, politicians and hometown heroes.

Information about Will and the Will Rogers Memorial Museums leads “These Places Highlight Famous Faces” and spread across two color pages focuses on the man and the Claremore Museum and Birthplace Ranch. Photos at the Museum taken from below the statue of Will on Soapsuds and the iconic Jo Davidson statue in the rotunda, a duplicate of the much-photographed statue in the U.S. Capitol.

“It is great to see a national magazine recognize Will’s importance to America and encourage visitors to come to Claremore and visit the museum,” said Tad Jones, Museums executive director. “We get thousands of visitors each year and this recognition will only help increase those totals and continue to have a positive impact on the area.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Will’s first foray into the movie business and next year will be the bicentennial of Hannibal, boyhood home of Samuel Clemens, pen name Mark Twain.

At the Clinton Library you can see a smaller version of the Will Rogers statue. It was a gift to Clinton and all the nation’s governors at the National Governor’s Conference at Shangri-La, and sat in the middle of his Oval Office desk while he was in the White House.

The Group Travel Family delivers to banks, Chambers of Commerce, alumni, boomers, mature, church, African-Americans, meeting planners and agri-tourism, reaching more than 25,000 travel groups across the nation.
