RoCo Fit: Fun, Free Couch to 5k Program Starts in March


The Rogers County Free Fitness Training “Couch to 5k” Program (RoCo Fit) starts March 27th. If you have ever wanted to do a 5k or if you want a group to walk or walk/run with for fun and fitness, this program is for you. Experienced mentors will guide participants through 12 weeks of progressive walk or walk/run workouts designed to help finish a 5k Mock race. Professionals will educate on form, injury prevention, core strength, nutrition, and safety. RoCo Fit is open and free of charge to anyone 13 years old or older that live, work, play, or learn in Rogers County.

Since 2012, RoCo Fit has offered this free program to the community. Over 2,000 unduplicated participants have registered and reaped the benefits. Rogers County Health Department is proud to continue supporting this program with a coordinator and incentives. However, the success is due to numerous partnerships and volunteers involved each session. Partnerships and community collaboration has contributed to improving health statistics for Rogers County.

I am a firm believer in this program! I started in spring of 2017 barely doing any type of exercise.  And now I actually have incorporated a couple extra days a week to do some type of exercise. It’s been a lifestyle change for me! I appreciate all I have gotten from being a part of this type of exercise group that allows you to start at your own pace! 

Thank you so much for doing RoCo Fit, I never ran until I started the program, wasn’t a total couch potato but wasn’t all that active because of work schedule. Since I’ve started I have improved my health, losing weight, toning and endurance. Laughter is the best medicine and I learned that through the friends I have met at RoCo Fit.

I love RoCo Fit!! Completing my 3rd session of RoCo Fit, I’ve made new friends, learned what a mentor truly is, they helped me through health issues, struggles, and encouraged me to keep going at what I could do that day, and I’ve completed 9 5K’s since last session in May, most recently the Tulsa Run! 

I was so deconditioned when I started RoCo Fit.  My job is so sedentary, I sit for hours.  My niece told me about RoCo Fit and asked me to join. I thought to myself that I would sign up and probably drop out. With the mentors’ encouragement and persistence I not only attended but I enjoyed it!!  I even accidentally lost 13 lbs!!  Hooray for RoCo Fit!!  I have so much more energy.

The first workout is on Tuesday, March 27th, 6:00 p.m. at Claremore Soccer Field Trailhead, workouts continue every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in Claremore Lake Park, starting at new Shelter across lake from boat dock.
