Music and Memories is a program that brings personalized music to Long Term Care residents with a dementia.   We have all experienced that feeling associated with hearing a song that is profoundly connected to a personal memory (the first dance with your love, the song your mother used to sing when she washed the dishes!). Not only do we reflect on the music and lyrics, but we can be brought back to that moment and time, along with the joy and comfort associated with it.   Research has found that our brains are hardwired to connect music with long-term memory, and persons with dementia can tap into deep emotional recall when offered a personalized list of music from their past.

The key to this program is to offer personalized music selections that are readily available on MP3 players that are loaded with their music preferences. Our veterans as well as their loved ones will be interviewed to create a personal collection for each participant that will be loaded onto their personal MP3 (Shuffle). Studies have demonstrated a variety of benefits, to include:

  • Someone who has been silent or less communicative may begin to talk and be more social
  • Someone who has been sad and depressed may feel happier
  • Residents are more cooperative, attentive and willing to accept care and at times reduce or eliminate sundowning (confusion and restlessness)
  • Families and staff are able to connect in a more meaningful way with residents
