Rogers State University has been named a recipient of a grant that honors the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The university received a MLK Day Mini-Grant Award worth $1,800 on Dec. 1 through the Iowa Campus Compact, a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to promoting campus-based civic engagement.

The mini-grants will fund higher education community projects across the country centered on alleviating hunger and serving veterans on and around the MLK Day of Service on Jan. 18, 2016. RSU was one of four Oklahoma universities to receive a grant.

RSU Director of Student Development Katy Launius said the grant will expand the school’s ability to connect with the community during its annual MLK Week of Service.

“With this grant, we can engage and educate more people about King’s legacy, which includes service to the community,” Launius said. “We will be able to send more volunteers out to the community, and we will also be able to welcome more people to campus events.”

RSU’s annual MLK Week of Service is one of the largest service projects in the area and helps the university positively engage the community to create change and improvement in the area. The week of events promotes and encourages opportunities for cultural, intellectual and personal enrichment for the university and the communities it serves.
