Growing Up on the Bank of the Verdigris

( Pronounced Verdigrees.)

When I was just a Kid
I did mostly
Just what kids Did
Get up when the Rooster Crowed
Do my chores
And skidaddled down to a place I Know’d
A place where I could swim and Play
Hunt trap and fish the live long Day
Just old Smokey and Me
Running wild as Injuns or outlaws
On the banks of the Verdigrees
Take my old grand pappy’s Gun
Kill bottles turtles and cans
Oh it was so much Fun
On the river there ain’t no books and Such
I guess school and books are fun to some
But to me not Much
Summer just last for a little While
Winter brings shoes and school
And the end of the world to this River Rat Chile
