Old Training Mortar Found on RSU Property

rsuA decades-old training mortar from the Oklahoma Military Academy was found Saturday on the RSU grounds by a campus visitor searching with a metal detector. The inert mortar was removed by the campus visitor. It was later turned over to Claremore Police Department and examined by the Tulsa Police Department bomb squad without incident.

The Oklahoma Military Academy operated for more than 50 years on the grounds of what is now RSU’s campus. During that time, OMA held drills on its undeveloped property, which included using inert mortars or training mortars filled with concrete. The school ceased operating as a military academy in 1971.

Saturday’s discovery was extremely unusual, but provides an important reminder that anyone who finds a suspicious item is urged to leave it untouched and contact the RSU Police Department immediately.
