Strange Jobs That No Longer Exist

Next time you complain about your job, think about these guys.

Rat catchers were used to keep the rodent population under control in Europe. It was a dangerous job, because rats bite when they’re mad. Plus, rats are nasty.





If not for lamplighters, cities would have been very dark back in the day.





In the days before alarm clocks, people known as “knocker-uppers” were hired to wake their clients in the mornings, using truncheons or pea shooters.






Enemy aircraft detection in the days prior to radar. Looks fun.





It would be really boring working in a factory on an assembly line, right? Back in the day, “lectors” were hired to read to the employees and provide entertainment.






Old-fashioned grave robbers known as “resurrectionists” would dig up corpses for universities to use as cadavers.
